Welcome to Lainey's Bat Mitzvah Website!

You may be asking yourself..."What is a bat mitzvah anyway?"

This day marks a young woman’s transition into adulthood within the Jewish community.  A bat mitzvah symbolizes her willingness to become responsible for performing mitzvot (good deeds) – the duties of Jewish life.

What will happen at the service?  What do I do there?

Lainey has spent several years studying and learning how to read Hebrew.  At her bat mitzvah, she will be called up to read from the Torah for the first time.  The rabbi will lead the service with Lainey, and will tell when you should stand and sit.

How long will it go? Will there be snacks?

We expect the service to run about 1h15 to 1h30 long.  Lainey will be paired with another classmate at services, who will also read from the Torah.  Challah and juice will be available after the service, but not a full oneg/kiddush lunch. But we will feed you well at the party that night!

What should I wear?

To the service: wear what you might wear to any religious service--a step nicer than what you might wear to school.  Think slacks and button down or sweater, suit, skirt or dress, etc.

To the party: cocktail/festive wear.  Be ready to dance!

Can I take pictures or text my friends during the service?

Sorry, cell phones **must** be turned off in the sanctuary.  We promise there will be plenty of chances for photos at the party though.

What are people wearing on their heads?

Traditionally, men and boys wear a kippah (yarmulke in Yiddish) in the sanctuary as a sign of respect.  Sometimes women wear them as well.  We will have them available for you (Jewish or not), but they are optional.
